How To Choose The Right Cast Stone Window Cills

Cast Stone window cills are commonly used to add impressive architectural details to brick, render and stone elevations. They are ideal for new build developments that are looking for traditional window styling, but are also a great way to add interest to modern homes.

How to choose the right cast stone window cills

Working with builders, architects and tradespeople, we understand that there is no one-size fits all when it comes to cast stone window cills. The growing trend for larger windows that let more light into properties, often means that bespoke sizes and styling are required for each individual project.
At Acanthus Cast Stone, we make the majority of our stone window cills to order, to ensure an accurate fit on site and to suit each individual window opening.
If you’re working with large windows that need longer stone cills, these can be manufactured in manageable pieces to help with installation.

Standard cast stone window cills:

As well as our bespoke offering, we have a series of standard window cill options to suit most building designs.

Cills to suit brickwork:

For buildings that have a brickwork exterior, we have five standard design options. For each design, stool sizes can be adjusted to suit your project.
Our C3 window cill style is ideal for installation beneath sliding sash or box sash windows in timber or uPVC, whilst the C4 style option features architectural detailing that’s perfect for the symmetrical styling of neo-classical, Georgian style buildings.

Cills to suit render:

Our cills for rendered buildings are designed to be deeper than our stone cills for brickwork, but our five standard designs offer the same aesthetics, so cills can suite across a housing development, even if there are different finishes to different style properties.

Cills to suit imperial brickwork:

If you’re working on a conservation or restoration project that features imperial brickwork, we also have a range of window cill designs. Many of these projects will also feature original timber sliding sash or box sash windows and our C3-Imp Style cill is ideal for this. Take a look at the drawings here.

Slip and bay window cills:

For properties that feature bay windows, we have stone cills for 90-degree and 45-degree bay window styles. We have 4 standard slip cill designs, including a decorative Georgian-style cill for beautiful bay window detailing.

Try before you buy:

Our cast stone window cills are available in a full range of natural stone colours, to complement any brick, render or stonework. If you need some support with your sales then we can offer free samples of our stone shades, that you can use to help your clients make the perfect choice.

Our colour options are:

• Portland – classic white-grey limestone formation, seen on British architectural icons including St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Port of Liverpool Building
• Bathstone – true to its name, a pale, buff coloured stone that’s seen on the heritage buildings in historic Bath
• Cotswold – a warm, honey stone to mimic the idyllic cottages and dry-stone walls of the Cotswolds
• Yorkstone – like most things from Yorkshire, Yorkstone is hardwearing and durable, it’s commonly used for paving and garden walls, so perfect for properties that want matching stone for home and garden
• Natural Grey – with all things home and garden, grey is back in the fold for home improvements, a perfect complement to light render

Getting the size right:

Perfect sizing is crucial for window cills. All we need from you is a measurement of the window opening or structural opening, brick-to-brick. Our technical CAD designers can take care of the rest.

Matching window heads and keystones:

Our extensive range of standard cast stone window cills are available with matching cast stone window heads and keystones to complete the look. These are available in both standard and bespoke sizes and designs.
